Eamonn Holmes and Ruth Langsford were seen by many as one of the best couples in showbiz and the golden duo surprised everyone when they announced they had split after 14 years of marriage.

A short statement from a representative shared on Saturday confirmed the news and read: ‘Ruth Langsford and Eamonn Holmes have confirmed their marriage is over and they are in the process of divorcing.’

The couple tied the knot in 2010 but started dating way back in 1997. So, just how did Eamonn and Ruth first meet?

How they met? Eamonn and Ruth were introduced through a mutual friend, TV presenter Sally Meen, but as Eamonn was recently split from his wife, they kept their love hidden at first.

He and ex-wife Gabrielle share three children, Declan, Niall, and Rebecca, and were together for the guts of 20 years before separating in 1995.

Eamonn met Ruth shortly after she had moved to London after working on a number of presenting roles on the burgeoning satellite TV networks as she wanted to break into mainstream TV.

As Eamonn was still married to Gabrielle, he and Ruth weren’t all lovey-dovey in public so as not to be insensitive to his children.

While many women might be turned off by a lack of public affection, Ruth revealed it made her love Eamonn more as a result.

She revealed during a 2017 interview with The Daily Mail: ‘I thought it spoke volumes about the sort of man he was, the sort of father he was and the integrity he had. It made me love him more, not less.’

Popping the question

Eamonn’s divorce from Gabrielle was finalised in 2005 and in 2010 and he got down on one knee to Ruth during the Cheltenham races. They married that year on June 26.

Eamonn had even asked for Ruth’s mother’s permission to marry her daughter as Ruth’s father unfortunately had advanced Alzheimer’s.

Welcoming their son

By the time they married, Ruth and Eamonn had welcomed their son Jack, who was born in 2002, and she revealed that she had wished for more children but it wasn’t meant to be.

She said: ‘I didn’t meet Eamonn until I was 37. I would have liked to have had more children but everything in life is about timing and my timing has always been later rather than sooner.’

Eamonn’s health troubles

Throughout their 14-year marriage, Ruth was by Eamonn’s side as he dealt with a series of health battles including chronic back pain and surgery.

Just days before their divorce was announced Ruth spoke with Women’s Weekly about his health and admitted that she wasn’t sure if he’d ever be ‘100 per cent again’.

She said: ‘He does the physio, but there might have to be some acceptance that this might never be 100 per cent right. With any care situation – and there are millions of carers in this country – it isn’t always easy. It’s testing but we manage as a family.’

Announcing their split

Ruth and Eamonn confirmed their decision to divorce in May 2024 amid much speculation that a statement was imminent.

Commenting on their split, a source told MailOnline: ‘It’s a very sorry tale. They are both so loved by the British public, they won over so many people on This Morning which they hosted for more than a decade.’
