Prince George successfully persuaded his grandfather King Charles to change a centuries-old rule before his Coronation.

When Prince George was chosen to be a Page of Honour for King Charles for his Coronation in May 2023, it was no doubt a huge honour for the then-nine year old.

However he wanted one ancient royal tradition to be changed for the ceremony, which the King granted him, and it was to do with the outfits worn by the Pages

George did not want to wear the white knee breeches as he reportedly feared being teased at Lambrook, the school in Berkshire he attends with his siblings Princess Charlotte and Prince Louis.

A source claimed that George also “wasn’t keen on wearing tights and becoming a subject of ribaldry at school”, with the King allowing the Pages to wear trousers instead, according to The Mail.

George and his fellow Pages – Nicholas Barclay, Lord Oliver Cholmondeley and Ralph Tollemache – played a significant role on Coronation Day at Westminster Abbey.

They walked behind the King as he entered the Abbey, carrying his robes and helping to keep them arranged and out of Charles’s way on one of the most important days of his life.

This honour is usually granted to teenage sons of members of the nobility and gentry, or to the sons of senior Royal Household members, making George rather young to be carrying out the role.

Queen Camilla also had her own Pages of Honour who were members of her own family – her grandsons Gus and Louis Lopes and Freddy Parker-Bowles, and her great-nephew Arthur Elliot.

For the Coronation the Pages wore scarlet frock coats with gold trimmings, white satin waistcoats, black trousers, white gloves, black buckled shoes and a lace cravat and ruffles.

A source previously said before the Coronation: “The King is very keen to show those in the line of succession, his natural heirs, at the centre of his Coronation.

“Even though he is only nine, George is very mature and already has a deep understanding of the roles of his grandfather and father, as well as his future role.

“This task is a wonderful sign of the future being laid out by the King.”

As second in line to the throne after Prince William, special measures are being put in place to help George prepare for one day sitting on the throne.

For instance he will no longer be able to travel in the same plane as William and his sister Princess Charlotte in case of an accident, meaning the royal bloodline will be preserved.

A royal rule that limits which royals can travel together to the same place will come into effect when the young Prince turns 12 in July 2025.
