Ed Sheeran has been targeted by furious fans after the singer was pictured enjoying a drink with Johnny Depp, with some people threatening to turn on the Bad Habits hitmaker for the first time
Ed Sheeran is facing a furious backlash from angry fans thanks to the singer hanging out with controversial actor Johnny Depp earlier this week.
Angry social media commentators have called for Sheeran to be cancelled over the snap, with some shocked to see a singer they previously thought was “quite sound” cosying up to Depp.
The Shape of You singer was smiling as he posed for a selfie with Depp and Russell Crowe. All three celebrities were seen enjoying a drink backstage at an Andrea Bocelli concert near Florence.
The photo showed the trio grinning at the camera while sipping on pints of Guinness.
Will Smith and his son Jaden were also spotted backstage. Oscar-winning actor Crowe shared the snap of himself, Deep and Sheeran on his Twitter (X) account on Thursday, captioning it:
“Teatro del Silenzio backstage shenanigans with Teddy & Johnny. Lubrication by Guinness. Perfect. Grazie Millie Maestro Andrea Bocelli. What an incredible experience.”
The Gladiator star’s social media update quickly sparked a heated debate in the replies, with some Twitter users shocked to see Sheeran rubbing shoulders with Depp, 61. Sheeran’s fans criticised the post due to Depp’s very divisive reputation following the Pirates of the Caribbean star’s high-profile defamation case with ex-wife Amber Heard, 38, in 2022, which was broadcast globally via live stream.
“I always thought the hate for Ed Sheeran was so forced, but now I guess call me an Ed Sheeran hater because wtf is this,” one upset Twitter user wrote as they quote-tweeted Crowe’s post on Thursday. “F***in hell, I thought Ed Sheeran was quite sound despite the constant Irish appropriation. That is f***in abysmal,” another added, as a third fumed: “When the random Top 40 singer you dislike for just being dumb and annoying and unfunny finally is outed for a legitimate reason to dislike them.”
Sheeran, Depp and Crowe all played a part in Bocelli’s show, with Sheeran performing a duet with the tenor on stage. Depp played the guitar while Bocelli sang a tribute to English guitarist and Depp’s mate Jeff Beck, who passed away in January 2023. Crowe also made an appearance on stage at the event, demonstrating his impressive vocal range.
Depp received massive support from his fans during the trial in Fairfax County, Virginia, in June 2022. Depp successfully sued his ex-wife over a newspaper article titled: “I spoke up against sexual violence – and faced our culture’s wrath. That has to change.”
Although the op-ed did not directly name the actor, Depp’s legal team successfully argued in court that the article defamed him and affected his career due to the implied allegations he had abused his ex-wife throughout their marriage – something the actor has always vehemently denied.
Depp was awarded $10 million (£8 million) in compensatory damages and an additional $5 million (£4 million) in punitive damages in June, after a six-week long high-profile televised defamation trial where a jury found Heard’s allegations to be false and defamatory towards Depp.
The jury also held the City of Lies star accountable for defamation against his former wife when one of his lawyers claimed her allegations of sexual abuse were a “hoax.” They awarded the mother-of-one $2 million in compensatory damages and $0 in punitive damages.
After the jury’s decision on June 1, Depp expressed gratitude to his followers on Instagram the following day and hailed the jury for “giving me my life back” in a heartfelt statement. Celebrities such as Jennifer Aniston and Paris Hilton were amongst the famous names to like Depp’s post on June 2.
Two months later, some stars quietly retracted their support for Depp after explosive unsealed court documents from his legal battle with Heard surfaced in August 2022. The bombshell unsealed files from the Depp-Heard defamation case presented fresh allegations and claims previously barred from their courtroom showdown, which concluded two months ago with Depp’s victory in his libel lawsuit against his former spouse.
Reports suggested that the newly public pretrial documents include assertions that Depp intended to present Heard’s explicit photos as evidence in the trial earlier in the year. Heard faced restrictions on levelling specific accusations at Depp. After the documents were released, A-listers like Sophie Turner, Bella Hadid, and Yungblud appeared to withdraw their ‘likes’ from Depp’s celebratory Instagram post dated June 1.
