Did Prince George Secretly Wear a Taylor Swift Concert Bracelet in His Birthday Photo?
The birthday boy showcased the accessory around the same time as two other royal family members
Prince George’s personal style is shining through in his new birthday portrait by mom Kate Middleton.
The second in line to the throne is celebrating his 11th birthday on July 22, and Princess Kate and Prince William continued tradition by releasing a new photo of their eldest son to mark the milestone. A close look at the black and white snap of Prince George in a dark blazer and pants with a white shirt also shows an unexpected accessory — a string bracelet reminiscent of the friendship bracelet trend among Swifties at Taylor Swift’s Eras Tour concerts.
Last month, for his 42nd birthday on June 21, Prince William took Prince George and Princess Charlotte, 9, to Taylor Swift’s Eras Tour in London, where they had the chance to meet the superstar and her boyfriend, Travis Kelce. The royal family’s rare selfies with Swift, shared on Instagram, captured the children’s beaming smiles. A few weeks later, George and Charlotte were spotted wearing string bracelets.
Friendship bracelets (especially with beads) have had an explosive pop culture moment amid Swift’s global Eras Tour, inspired by a line about the DIY jewelry in the lyrics of a song on her 2022 album Midnights. On July 14, Prince George and Princess Charlotte were both spotted wearing string bracelets during individual sporty outings with their parents, Prince William and Princess Kate.
Last Sunday, Prince George and Prince William traveled to Germany for the UEFA European Championship between England and Spain, where a multicolor string bracelet was visible on George’s left wrist. The father and son clapped, cheered and reacted to the high-stakes soccer game with similar expressions, where Spain ultimately won 2-1.
The same day, Princess Charlotte had a girl’s day out with mom Princess Kate, 42, and aunt Pippa Middleton at the Wimbledon Tennis Championships, where the little princess wore two string bracelets (pale pink and blue) on her right arm.
The event was especially memorable as the Princess of Wales’ second public appearance of 2024 as she continues treatment for cancer. It likely doubled as her last public appearance for a while as the royals traditionally retreat outside of the spotlight during the summer months.
“She won’t have to be on center stage,” a palace insider tells PEOPLE exclusively in this week’s issue. “Being with her family and just being herself will give her energy. There will be plenty of time to focus on her recovery.”
Possible Swiftie status aside, Prince George and Princess Charlotte aren’t the only members of the royal family who have been wearing string bracelets this summer — so has King Charles!
The King was first seen wearing a red and yellow twisted string bracelet when he traveled to Wales with Queen Camilla on July 11, and waved on his way into the Senedd, the Welsh Parliament. The sovereign, 75, was pictured in it again in the Channel Islands of Jersey and Guernsey on July 15 and 16, and also at the State Opening of Parliament on July 17.
While the monarch’s surprise accessory doesn’t exactly match his grandchildren’s, it’s notable that all three royals started wearing the bracelets around the same time. King Charles, Prince George and Princess Charlotte weren’t seen with the bracelets at Trooping the Colour on June 15, suggesting that the relaxed accessory has been a new addition in recent weeks.
King Charles has previously paid tribute to his grandchildren through style, and the Daily Mail reported that the pink and blue dinosaur tie in his royal wardrobe is “thought to have been a Christmas gift from one of his grandchildren.”
The sovereign made the latest fashion statement in the bracelet when he gave a wave after departing the Houses of Parliament on July 17, Queen Camilla’s 77th birthday, and appeared in good spirits as he continues cancer treatment.
