The Duke of Sussex revealed how he got the nickname “spare” by a senior working royal on the day he was born.
Prince Harry revealed how he got the nickname “spare” which ended up becoming the title of his bombshell memoir.
The Duke of Sussex shocked royal watchers worldwide last January when he released Spare, which contained many claims about the Royal Family and Harry’s life within the Firm.
Harry claimed that his father, King Charles, allegedly referred to him as a “spare” in a conversation with his late mother, Princess Diana, on the day he was born.
In his memoir, the duke revealed that the term “Heir and a Spare” was often used to describe him.
He recounted an alleged statement by his father to his late mother on the day of his birth: “Wonderful! Now you’ve given me an Heir and a Spare—my work is done.”
“A joke. Presumably. On the other hand, minutes after delivering this bit of high comedy, Pa was said to have gone off to meet with his girlfriend. So. Many a true word spoken in jest.”
Elsewhere, Harry alleged that he was “the shadow, the supporting actor, the plan B.”
He added: “I was brought into this world in case something happened to Willy.”
The prince’s alleged revelations in his bombshell memoir are believed to have widened his ongoing rift with the royals even further even though, according to Harry, he left out several stories about the King and his older brother, Prince William.
He told the Telegraph at the time of his book’s publication: “It could have been two books, put it that way. And the hard bit was taking things out.
“There are some things that have happened, especially between me and my brother, and to some extent between me and my father, that I just don’t want the world to know. Because I don’t think they would ever forgive me.”
Shortly after Spare’s release the Duke and Duchess of Sussex were evicted from their UK base, Frogmore Cottage in Windsor.
Since then, Harry’s claims are said to have affected his relationship with the royals so much that he is now not on “speaking terms” with the Prince of Wales.
